The Metropolitan Hotel, Bangkok

This is it. As some of you already know by now, my birthday gift for Cy this year is a trip to Bangkok (Check out, Cool Birthday Gift Ideas for Guys) Since Cy has already been to Bangkok before and pretty much did the "touristy" stuff na, and since my best friend is an expat in this place, the theme of this Bangkok trip is really experiencing the city at its finest.

Though we planned to stay at my best friend Ken's place, we wanted to squeeze in at least a 2-night's stay at a boutique hotel because we've learned from various people and articles that boutique hotels are now one of Bangkok's main attractions. They are popping out everywhere, each with its own unique concept. As I was searching for the perfect boutique hotel, I came across the Top 10 lists of Asia Web Direct and found The Metropolitan Hotel.

Asia Web Direct described the Metropolitan Hotel as this:

The ‘sister’ to London's coolest city hotel, this is a place where the clichéd East-meets-West approach to hotel design is executed to sublime effect. Everything from the crisply dressed staff (uniforms by Japanese designer Yohji Yamamoto) and the Orient-tinged interiors is achingly hip.

With interiors by Singaporean designer Kathryn Kng, the 171 rooms and suites are bright and modern, infused with a cool, Zen-like calm. Dark teakwood floors and fittings, Oriental furnishings and crisp, contemporary lines define the hotel's signature 'pared down' look.

Everything else matches in the hip stakes: it’s convenient location on Sathorn Road, trendy bar, spa and the out-of-this-world contemporary cuisine served up.

Apart from Asia Web Direct, I also looked at other reviews and everyone just raved about it! My best friend also highly recommended it and looking at its list of awards, (Hospitality Platinum Hotel Awards 2008: Signature Deluxe Hotel Award, Top 5 Signature Hotel Spa/ Thailand Tourism Awards 2008: Excellence for Boutique Hotel/ Conde Nast Traveller Readers' Travel Awards 2007: Best Overseas Business Hotels (15th)/Lifestyle & Travel City Slickers Guide: Best Luxury Leisure Hotel in Bangkok/ The Ultimate Spa Guide: Top Asian Spas/ Leading Hotels of the World: Quality Award/ Metro magazine: High 5 Award, Bangkok), plus its affordable internet rates, I was just completely sold!

That was months ago...having actually stayed there now, it's just a whole other level of satisfaction.
Cy and I stayed at the King-Sized Studio Room -- a room as big as my condo of absolute BLISS.

Everything was just made to perfection. It's very simple in style -- understated chic as they described it but it just worked so well. The bathroom was designed to look endless and having a bath just made you feel like a princess I swear! The service is just impeccable. They would leave us little postcards and letters each time they were unable to do their wake up call or house cleaning because we weren't around. Everything we need, they'd be there right on cue and the little details in the room were just amazing. What's more, each complimentary item, from the bottled waters to the lotion, to the toothbrush were all thought-out an well made. In fact, they generously re-filled fabulous products from their Como Shambhala Wellness Center.

Free shuttle rides from various main areas were available any time and you can also use their Mac Mini for free internet use in the lobby. Moving on to the lobby, it was just so sleek that every time we enter or leave the place we just felt like we were special

As mentioned at Asia Web Direct, "Everything else matches in the hip stakes: its trendy bar, spa and the out-of-this-world contemporary cuisine served up" and they are super right. As you will discover in my blog, there are other amazing establishments found in the Metropolitan Hotel compound which includes:

The Como Shambhala Urban Escape
The Met Bar
Glow and,
Cy'an

Cy and I are just really in love with this hotel and we were sad to leave. When you think of Bangkok, you immediately think of weekend markets, street food, hostels, and the red light district as the ultimate Bangkok experience but there really IS more. Bangkok has an elegant, conceptual side to it too... and boutique hotels such as The Metropolitan Hotel is a great way to bond with your loved ones...I SWEAR! Haha.

PS. This is just the beginning of a whole slew of interesting Bangkok discoveries Cy and I would like to share with you. Watch out as I blog about our culinary experiences, historical trips, rooftop bar-hopping, among other things.

PPS. Have you been to any other lovely boutique hotels in Bangkok? I would love to know! Remember, best comment could get you P1,000 worth of GCs from Sentro :) ***I am now changing this to Qasa 61 GCs :)

XOXO,
Kai :)

One hotel that is really nice is LUXX. They first started out as a small hotel in Soi Decho at Si Lom road, and recently opened LUXX XL located at Lang Suan road.

Rooms: What i love about LUXX XL is their sexy bathroom concept... haha... you may open a window to see the whole toilet from your room. Kinky yet nice. The "sexy bathroom" concept is a growing fad here among hotels. Another nice thing about LUXX is their DVD and Magazine library wherein you can borrow them and bring it up to your room to enjoy a relaxing time with your partner or companion... They also have breakfast in bed wherein you can choose which breakfast you like the night before...

Down south of Thailand to the province of Phuket, i went to this resort called Indigo Pearl. The lobby with its high ceilings is made out of wood and you would smell very good scent of their aromatic fragrances from essential oils. You would also be welcomed with a refreshing drink. They also play very nice beach/chill out music (the hotel was kind enough to give me a copy). One nice thing about this is that 2 Filipinos work in this hotel too... you can just check out their site at http://www.indigo-pearl.com/.

Last... October 2009, i spent a relaxing weekend with my good friend, Bank, at a province called Hua Hin. It is a 2 hour drive south of Bangkok. One of my favorites here is the pool side bar (happy hour buy 1 take 1 from 5pm-6om). The room is fab as well, and you even get to choose which kind of pillow you like (soft medium or hard).

I can go on and on with all the experiences that i had here in Thailand... but i might take up your blog space already. Now you would know why they call it AMAZING THAILAND.

I'm glad that you enjoyed your stay here.

I would also be glad if i win those GCs... haha...
